The belief that Jesus is the “Son of God” is a result of misunderstandings and external influences.

Three main reasons for this confusion:

1. *The Miraculous Birth of Jesus*

• Jesus (peace be upon him) was born miraculously from the Virgin Mary without a father. Some took this as proof of divine sonship.

• However, Adam (peace be upon him) was created without a father or mother, and Eve was created from Adam alone without a mother.

• The Quran clarifies this in:

“Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, ‘Be,’ and he was.” (Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:59)

• If Jesus’ miraculous birth makes him divine, then Adam would have a greater claim, yet no one calls Adam the son of God.

2. *The Metaphorical Use of “Son of God” in the Bible*

• The term “son of God” was used metaphorically for righteous servants of God, not literally for divine offspring.

For example:

• David: “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to me, ‘You are My Son, today I have begotten you.’” (Psalm 2:7)

• Solomon: “He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he shall be My son.” (2 Samuel 7:13-14)

• Israel (Jacob’s descendants): “Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord: Israel is My son, My firstborn.’” (Exodus 4:22)

• The term “*begotten*” used for Jesus was later added and isn’t in original Greek texts.

3. *Influence of Pagan Beliefs on Early Christianity*

• Early Christianity came into contact with pagan beliefs from Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Hindu traditions, where gods had actual sons. These influences slowly shaped the idea of Jesus as a divine son. Later, Emperor Constantine got involved in Christian teachings and, through the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, helped make Jesus’ divinity an official belief, driven by political reasons.

• Examples of pagan gods with sons:

• Greco-Roman Beliefs: Zeus had sons like Hercules.

• Egyptian Mythology: Osiris had Horus.

• Hinduism: Vishnu had divine sons like Krishna.

• The mix between Jesus’ teachings and these pagan traditions led to the evolution of the “Son of God” concept.

*Islam’s Clarification:*

The Quran rejects the idea of God having a son. Jesus is honored as a prophet and servant of God, and Islam calls for the worship of Allah alone, without partners or offspring.
