First published on: 5 Tips for Happiness through Ramadan

Muslims nowadays have a guest month; Ramadan. It’s the 9th month of the lunar year (Hijri year). Ramadan makes inner and outer changes in the Muslims’ life. Such changes lead to happiness according to your level of commitment and Allah’s support (only One God). Here are 5 tips for happiness through Ramadan to share with Muslims:

1) True Salvation

To begin with, committing sins is the burden of life. By continuously clearing yourself from sins, you can elevate your soul and be the happiest.

The major sin ever is to set a partner for your Creator. And the gateway to clear this sin is to declare your belief in the only One God, as well as to believe in His Messenger. Indeed, this is the core of Islam’s message.

After this, it’s natural as a human to commit other sins. Here the role of Ramadan appears. Fasting during this month daily can help you to clear your sins.

Messenger Muhammad (PBUH) says:

He who observes fasting during the month of Ramadan with Faith while seeking its reward from Allah, will have his past sins forgiven.” [Hadith by Bukhari & Muslim] (1)

Ramadan is not the only way to salvation, but one of the major ones. Islam is a practical religion. No one carries the burden of others, and no one guarantees the salvation of others away from His Creator.

2) Freedom from Evil Desires

Ramadan serves as a tool for Muslims to practice increasing their patience and self-control. By abstaining from food, drinking and sex daily from dawn to sunset, you practically understand that you can stop the bad routines in your life.

Allah the Almighty says:

And as for those who were in awe of standing before their Lord and restrained themselves from ˹evil˺ desires, (40) Paradise will certainly be ˹their˺ home. (41)”  [Qur’an, 79: 40-41] (2)

Moreover, fasting reduces your dependence on materials like food & coffee. Consequently, it softens the heart and makes it more receptive. So you can understand, feel and respond to the commands of the Qur’an more than any other time.

3) Empathy for Others:

Being in someone else’s shoes makes one feel and relate to how they feel. Many in this world may abstain from food or water… not by choice, but due to poverty or not being able to find food or water. Fasting humbles Muslims and puts them in the shoes of others so they can have empathy. Also, to realize what they are going through and help them. Before the Eid, there is an obligatory charity. Every Muslim, old or young, has to feed the needy. And this is the true happiness you can achieve.

4) Relation between Ramadan And Qur’an

Adding to the previous tips for happiness through Ramadan, the Qur’an is an essential one. Indeed, Allah the Almighty has revealed His book ‘the Qur’an’ to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in this month. This indicates that the Qur’an has a special effect at that time. Generally, the Qur’an is a book of guidance and healing for those who sincerely seek these meanings in this book.

5) Supplication in Ramadan

One of the powerful miracles of Ramadan is answering the supplications. It’s time to come closer to your Creator and to ask Him your needs in addition to guidance. You suffer a lot, so no time for hesitation. Here is the true happiness.

when Allah speaks about the rulings of Ramadan in the Qur’an, he gives us this Verse in between to indicate this meaning:

And when My servants ask you, [O Muḥammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” [Qur’an, 2: 186] (3)
