The Qurʾān is a book that constantly calls us to reflect on God’s creation. We are surrounded by signs of God’s existence and greatness. However, we also live in a time that is very fast-paced and people often distract themselves from reflection. Allah says: “And how many a sign within the heavens and earth do they pass by, yet they turn away from it.” (Surah Yusuf: 105) Allah also says: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Those who remember Allah standing and sitting and lying on their sides and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: Our Lord! You have not created this without purpose! Glory be to You! So save us then from the torment of the fire. (Surah Ale Imran: 190-191).
We can reflect while driving to work, walking to school, and even when laying in bed. God’s signs are all around us, in the heavens, on earth, and even within our own body and life. A few moments of reflection sometimes rejuvenates the heart more than hours of unreflective worship.
