Why did Prophet Muhammad Fight?

thomas carlyle, a devout christian, answers this question in a way that refutes the allegation that islam spread by sword.

“in 622 ad, the intention of this prophet was to spread his religion (islam) through wisdom and fair admonition. he did his best to achieve this but the wrongdoers and disbelievers did not only reject his mission and call for the right path, but only tried to silence him by all means: threat, menace, and oppression lest his mission should spread. all this justified his defending himself and his mission in the face of quraish.

“i believe that right spreads in any way as per circumstances: hasn’t christianity resorted to sword sometimes”? charlemagne did enough with saxons. i do not care if right spreads by sword, tongue, or any other means. let facts spread their power through oratory, press, or through fire; let facts struggle with all its might for it will never be beaten except for those facts that deserve to perish.

“let us put the question in other words: mohammad fought his enemies and resisted those who fought him, but why did moslems fight outside their homelands? they fought against the persians and romans in big battles. now, does not this prove that islam is inclined to violence and spreads by sword?

“the person who asks this question does not know that the mission of islam is a global mission from its first day. it is not like the missions of the previous prophets and messengers such as jesus christ – peace be upon him- who tells his disciples: ‘i was sent only to the lost sheep of israel."  (john 15:24) and again he stresses this point: “"do not go among the gentiles or enter any town of the samaritans. go rather to the lost sheep of israel.” (john 10:5) and in the bible of mark the idea is reiterated: “jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of tyre. he entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. in fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an evil spirit came and fell at his feet. the woman was a greek, born in syrian phoenicia. she begged jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. "first let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs."

“as for islam, its mission is universal. allah – swt – says in the holy qur’an: “and in no way have we sent you except as a constant bearer of good tidings and a constant warner to the whole of mankind.” (sheba 28) and “and in no way have we sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.” (the prophets 107)

“so the proposition that persians and romans are not included in the islamic mission contradicts the divine wisdom in sending his prophet and does not match the broad meaning of allah’s mercy that embraces all creatures.

“another question rises here: wasn’t it more suitable to present this mission through understanding instead of fighting?

“this really happened. the prophet – peace be upon him- send his emissaries who had the highest levels of understanding, maturity, and commitment to truthfulness in conveying his messages. among these were abdullah bin hudhafa as-sahmi who was sent to khosrau, the king of the persians. the prophet wrote him: "(this letter is) from muhammad the slave of allah and his prophet to khosrau the ruler of persia. peace be upon him, who follows the right path and witnesses that there is no god but allah and muhammad is the prophet of allah. furthermore i invite you to the call of allah – the great and almighty- for i am the prophet of allah to all mankind to warn whomever is living and that the saying may come true against the disbelievers. if you become a muslim you will be safe and if you reject this invitation of islam you will be committing a sin by misguiding your persians.’

upon reading the letter khosrau went mad and tore the letter into pieces. he wrote to the ruler of yemen: “i heard that a man from quraish appeared in mecca and claimed to be a prophet. go to him and ask him to repent. otherwise, kill him and send me his head.” he ended his letter: “dare he to write me in this way while he is my slave?”

consequently, the ruler of yemen, sent two knights along with the letter of khosrau and told him: “khosrau ordered king bazan to send someone to bring you. if you refuse, you and your people will die and your land will be destroyed.”

“so, who declared war? khosrau did.

“as for caesar the prophet – peace be upon him- sent dihya al kalbi. caesar was wiser than khosrau because he was familiar with the scriptural knowledge (torah and gospel) that mentioned the approach of the appearance of prophet muhammad – peace be upon him.

history tells us that upon receiving the prophet’s letter caesar searched about some meccans to inquire about the sender of the letter. he found abu sufyan- the biggest enemy of the prophet at the time – along with a group of merchants with him.

he called for his translator who, translating caesar’s question said to them, "who amongst you is closely related to that man who claims to be a prophet?" abu sufyan replied, "i am the nearest relative to him (amongst the group)."

caesar said, "bring him (abu sufyan) close to me and make his companions stand behind him." abu sufyan added, caesar told his translator to tell my companions that he wanted to put some questions to me regarding that man (the prophet) and that if i told a lie they (my companions) should contradict me." abu sufyan added, "by allah! had i not been afraid of my companions labeling me a liar, i would not have spoken the truth about the prophet.

once abu sufyan answered all caesar’s questions about muhammad, caesar said: “i asked you about his family and your reply was that he belonged to a very noble family. in fact all the apostles come from noble families amongst their respective peoples. i questioned you whether anybody else amongst you claimed such a thing, your reply was in the negative. if the answer had been in the affirmative, i would have thought that this man was following the previous man's statement. then i asked you whether anyone of his ancestors was a king. your reply was in the negative, and if it had been in the affirmative, i would have thought that this man wanted to take back his ancestral kingdom.

i further asked whether he was ever accused of telling lies before he said what he said, and your reply was in the negative. so i wondered how a person who does not tell a lie about others could ever tell a lie about allah. i then asked you whether the rich people followed him or the poor. you replied that it was the poor who followed him. and in fact all the prophets have been followed by this very class of people.

then i asked you whether his followers were increasing or decreasing. you replied that they were increasing, and in fact this is the way of true faith, till it is complete in all respects. i further asked you whether there was anybody, who, after embracing his religion, became displeased and discarded his religion. your reply was in the negative, and in fact this is (the sign of) true faith, when its delight enters the hearts and mixes with them completely. i asked you whether he had ever betrayed.

you replied in the negative and likewise the apostles never betray. then i asked you what he ordered you to do. you replied that he ordered you to worship allah and allah alone and not to worship any thing along with him and forbade you to worship idols and ordered you to pray, to speak the truth and to be chaste. if what you have said is true, he will very soon occupy this place underneath my feet and i knew it (from the scriptures) that he was going to appear but i did not know that he would be from you, and if i could reach him definitely, i would go immediately to meet him and if i were with him, i would certainly wash his feet.' caesar then asked for the letter addressed by allah's prophet, which was delivered by dihya to the governor of busra, who forwarded it to caesar to read. the contents of the letter were as follows: "in the name of allah the beneficent, the merciful (this letter is) from muhammad the slave of allah and his prophet to caesar the ruler of byzantine. peace be upon him, who follows the right path. furthermore i invite you to islam, and if you become a muslim you will be safe, and allah will double your reward, and if you reject this invitation of islam you will be committing a sin by misguiding your arisiyin (peasants). (and i recite to you allah's statement :('o people of the scripture! come to a word common to you and us that we worship none but allah and that we associate nothing in worship with him, and that none of us shall take others as lords beside allah. then, if they turn away, say: bear witness that we are muslims (those who have surrendered to allah).' (the family of imran 64).

Refuting Misconceptions

the reply on this discredit

is it muhammad’s fault that his folk are adulterers and that they will be punished in hell? he (pbuh) didn’t ever commit such a sin, especially before legation and in his youth although it was a very easy thing to do at that time in such society. there were special places known by all people at that time where one could find his forbidden pleasures. these places were marked with red fags, so that people could find them easily; they were known as “the red flags houses”.

so in spite that this atmosphere were very common and confessed by the whole society, our beloved prophet didn’t commit this sin ever, and all biography books say that he is a virtuous and chaste person and the almighty allah has sent him to change such manners of these societies.

muhammad’s message came to forbid  such actions and bad manners completely, and the holy quran mentions the kind of punishment that will given to those adulterers in this life and in the hereafter:

“the woman and the man guilty of illegal sexual intercourse, flog each of them with a hundred stripes. let not pity withhold you in their case, in a punishment prescribed by allah, if you believe in allah and the last day. and let a party of the believers witness their punishment. (this punishment is for unmarried persons guilty of the above crime but if married persons commit it, the punishment is to stone them to death, according to allah's law)." ( an nour:2)

this punishment has to be witnessed by all people, and if the adulterers are married they have to be punished by throwing them with stones till death.

those people – as mentioned in the holy quran - are of very low standard and can not be in a high level as the others:

“the adulterer-fornicator marries not but an adulteress-fornicatress or a mushrikah, and the adulteress-fornicatress none marries her except an adulterer-fornicator or a muskrik [and that means that the man who agrees to marry (have a sexual relation with) a mushrikah (female polytheist, pagan or idolatress) or a prostitute, then surely he is either an adulterer-fornicator, or a mushrik (polytheist, pagan or idolater). and the woman who agrees to marry (have a sexual relation with) a mushrik (polytheist, pagan or idolater) or an adulterer-fornicator, then she is either a prostitute or a mushrikah (female polytheist, pagan, or idolatress)]. such a thing is forbidden to the believers (of islâmic monotheism).” ( an nour:3)

so how could one be responsible for the sin committed by someone else?

can others carry someone else’s sins and repent instead of him?

in islam:

1st. committing sins is one’s own responsibility and has to be punished for it alone:

“allah burdens not a person beyond his scope. he gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. "our lord! punish us not if we forget or fall into error, our lord! lay not on us a burden like that which you did lay on those before us (jews and christians); our lord! put not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. pardon us and grant us forgiveness. have mercy on us. you are our maula (patron, suppor-ter and protector, etc.) and give us victory over the disbelieving people." “  (al baqarah:286)

“no person earns any (sin) except against himself (only), and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another.” ( al an’am:164)

and many other verses in the holy quran speak about this.

2ed. sins are not inherited and no one carries the sins of another one even if it is between sons and fathers.

“and fear a day (of judgement) when a person shall not avail another, nor will intercession be accepted from him nor will compensation be taken from him nor will they be helped.”

( al baqarah:48)

“there! every person will know (exactly) what (all) he had earned before, and they will be brought back to allah, their rightful lord (maula), and their invented false deities will vanish from them. “

( yunus:30)

“that allah may requite each person according to what he has earned. truly, allah is swift at reckoning." ( ibrahim:51)

“(remember) the day when every person will come up pleading for himself, and every one will be paid in full for what he did (good or evil, belief or disbelief in the life of this world) and they will not be dealt with unjustly.” ( an nahl:111)

“and allah has created the heavens and the earth with truth, in order that each person may be recompensed what he has earned, and they will not be wronged.” ( al jathiyah:22)

“every person is a pledge for what he has earned,” ( al muddaththir:38)

this is how islam treats the one who commits sins. no one will pay another’s sin, so why is muhammad (pbuh) blamed for being one of a tribe that doesn’t believe in the one allah and commits kinds of sins. he (pbuh) was sent by allah for being a virtuous person to carry allah’s last sent message to the whole world. the prophet never committed adultery and his message is forbidding it strictly and exhorting people to discharge their libido in marriage. that’s why all muslims are ordered not to overstate marriages and to help their sons and daughters to get married in an easy way.

the prophet used to hold marriages for the less amount of money. one day a young man came to him (pbuh) saying that he wants to marry but he doesn’t have enough money for that. the prophet told him “go and bring only a metal ring”. narrated by al bukhari.

and he (pbuh) also was making some of his companions marry only by what they memorize from the holy quran.

all these teachings and facilities given by the prophet to make marriages easier, made out of the islamic society at that time a very pure and chaste one. committing adultery at that time happened in very rare cases, and were treated and punished strictly to make people learn and get a lesson out of it.

so accusing the prophet that his tribe are adulterers isn’t reasonable at all, and their being punished in hell shows that no one – even if being one of the prophets family or relatives – carries the sin of others or can make allah forgive only for being one of muhammad’s tribe.

all people have to know the right path and follow it because he will be asked about all good and bad deeds he did in the doomsday…. :

“it is not (proper) for the prophet and those who believe to ask allah's forgiveness for the mushrikun (polytheists, idolaters, pagans, disbelievers in the oneness of allah) even though they be of kin, after it has become clear to them that they are the dwellers of the fire (because they died in a state of disbelief).” ( at tauba:113)

“and whenever you give your word (i.e. judge between men or give evidence, etc.), say the truth even if a near relative is concerned, and fulfill the covenant of allah, this he commands you, that you may remember. “ ( al an’am:152)

an example for that is the well known story of the woman that stole and was one of the tribe of “bani makhzoum” that was a well known tribe. her tribe tried not to let the prophet punish her; they sent zeid ( one of the prophet’s dearest) to him in order not to cut her hand ( as being the punishment of stealing mentioned in the holy quran). the prophet replied that this is an order from the almighty allah and can’t be changed. the prophet then orated to all people saying :” people in the past erred because they used to punish the weak and leave those of high honor…..and i swear to allah if fatema the daughter of muhammad stole, i would cut her hand” narrated by al bukhary

so the fact that some of the prophet’s relatives were polytheists - , as his uncle abu lahab, about whom the quran says:

“perish the two hands of abu lahab (an uncle of the prophet), and perish he! *his wealth and his children (etc.) will not benefit him! *he will be burnt in a fire of blazing flames! *and his wife too, who carries wood (thorns of sadan which she used to put on the way of the prophet, or use to slander him).* in her neck is a twisted rope of masad (palm fibre).  “(al masad )  -

and that the prophet won’t be able to intercede for them shows the great justice of islam in treating all people in the same way and punishing the sinners whether they are nobles or weak…

we conclude out of all this, that this statement isn’t something that shames muhammad, in the contrary, it shows how great, just and fair islam is……

Answering the Discredit that Says: The Prophet Died Poisoned

the reply on this discredit

when the hearts become ill and blind with hatred, this cause people to insult others with reasonable and unreasonable matters; as for example carping at someone’s small eyes or black skin. such forms of insulting others aren’t accepted by any reasonable thinker.

those people say that a jewish woman gave the prophet a poisoned sheep as a present and he died after eating it.

they take the interpretation of al baydawy as a witness for their claims:

“after conquering khaibar (year 7 after immigration), zeinab bint al hareth ( salam bin mishkam’s wife, who was a jew) asked:” what part of the sheep the prophet like most?” she was told that it is the arm because it is the most part of  the sheep’s body far from the offal. so she made a sheep and poisoned its arm with a very harmful poison that kills at the moment. she went and gave the prophet this sheep as a present.

when the prophet started eating, he said:” stop eating, because this sheep is poisoned”.

the prophet then went to this woman and asked her about the reason of her action, and she replied that she was paid by her tribe to do that. this was after conquering “khaibar”- the biggest jewish bulwark in madinah-. the prophet then forgave this woman.

those “doubters”, on the other hand ignore the interpretation of al baydawy that says:” when the prophet was near to die, he told aisha(his wife) :” the time came for my death; i feel the poison inside me killing me.”

dying after many years (year 10 after immigration) from eating this poison is because the almighty allah prevented him from being killed by others and protected him from all spiteful people, and also gave him (pbuh) the level of martyrdom.

also not dying directly after being poisoned, is a miracle given to the prophet proving his truthfulness and that he is in deed the last sent messenger by allah. and so the prophet died at the time that allah predestined, years after he had been given this poison.

Refuting the Suspicion that Says: The Prophet Tried to Commit Suicide

refuting this suspicion

to those who are against islam we say:” the statement that you follow to prove the prophet’s trail to commit suicide, is not a right one although it is written in “ sahih al bukhari” (part 9 page 38) . al bukhari did not mention this statement- that we will mention- as being a right “hadeeth” but he mentioned it as being a “telling”; that means it has been told by someone and not reported from the prophet himself.

ibn hijr al askalany said in (fateh al bari; part 12 page 376) :” al zahri told us this story and al bukhari narrated it from al zahri’s telling. so this telling is not reported from the prophet’s sayings. and al karamani said the same.”

this is the right story; the prophet never did this or even thought of doing this forbidden act because he is the leader of all believers and the sent messenger to all mankind.

the prophet is a human being, and as all of us he might feel depressed and sad sometimes; and this is normal:” glorified (and exalted) be my lord [(allâh) above all that evil they (polytheists) associate with him]! am i anything but a man, sent as a messenger?“ (al israa’: 93)

when jebril (pbuh) “gabriel” – the sent angel by allah to prophet muhammad – stopped coming to the prophet for a long time, the prophet missed him so much and went to the grotto of hiraa’ ( ghar hiraa’) on one of makka’s mountains, where he used to see and meet jebril.

in this place the prophet finds his comfort and serenity. some of the prophet’s enemies use the following verse from the quran as a proof for their claims:” it may be that you (o muhammad) are going to kill yourself with grief, that they do not become believers [in your risalah (messengership)“ ( ash- shu’araa’:3)

this verse doesn’t mean that the prophet intended to commit suicide at all, but it is a literary expression to show the prophet’s grief and deep sorrow because of his folk’s refusal to follow him and to believe in his message and in the holy sent book “ the holy quran”. look how concerned the prophet was in leading people to the right path, and getting them out from darkness to the light of the almighty allah.

this is a normal action done by a human being who confessed his being a human as mentioned in the holy quran :”and they say: "we shall not believe in you (o muhammad), until you cause a spring to gush forth from the earth for us;*or you have a garden of date-palms and grapes, and cause rivers to gush forth in their midst abundantly;*or you cause the heaven to fall upon us in pieces, as you have pretended, or you bring allâh and the angels before (us) face to face;*or you have a house of zukhruf (like silver and pure gold), or you ascend up into the sky, and even then we will put no faith in your ascension until you bring down for us a book that we would read“

( al israa’ : 90,91,92,93)….

the prophet answered the polytheists : “glorified (and exalted) be my lord [(allâh) above all that evil they (polytheists) associate with him “(al israa’ : 93) wondering their strange requests consisting that he is a human being who can’t offer them what they’ve requested :” am i anything but a man, sent as a messenger?”(al israa’ : 93)

and also, accusing the prophet that he has no miracles shows indeed the great ignorance of those people. the prophet (pbuh) as all other prophets had miracles given to him from the almighty allah; e.g.: the water that sprang out of his fingers, hearing the tree talking in one of the friday prayers , making out of a little amount of food what can be enough for a large number of people, in addition to his everlasting miracle that is the holy quran that allah promised to keep  as it is and promised to be interpreted, generations after generations according to what man discovers in all fields of life.

Refuting the Suspicion that Says: The Prophet's Need to be Prayed upon

refuting this suspicion

the prayer upon the prophet from the almighty allah and from us doesn’t suggest the prophet’s need, but it is to show allah’s honour, pride and respect to him and that of us too.

it is not, as some insulters say, that the prophet gets more advantages because allah forgave him from any done sin.

any fair comparison between prophet muhammad and all sent prophets before shows the prophet’s degree that reaches completeness. that is because the world doesn’t need any other messages or messenger after islam and muhammad (pbuh).

the prophet’s message is the last and only complete one among all other earlier messages. it covers all human needs, laws, organisations and treatments and how to apply morals and built great cultures.

such important things were not found in any other religion except islam.

and as for muhammad’s message, it is the mercy sent for all mankind:

” and we have sent you (o muhammad) not but as a mercy for the 'alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). “ (al anbia’:107)

the message of islam is not sent to a special folk as it was the case of many earlier folks like :

the folk of aad,

“and to 'ad (people, we sent) their brother hud. he said: "o my people! worship allah! you have no other ilah (god) but him." (al a’raf:65)

the folk of thamud,

“and to thamud (people, we sent) their brother salih (saleh). he said: "o my people! worship allah! you have no other ilah (god) but him” ( al a’raf : 73)

or the folk of madyan.

“and to (the people of) madyan (midian), (we sent) their brother shu'aib. he said: "o my people! worship allah! you have no other ilah (god) but him.”

and so was the case with any other prophet, except muhammad’s message that is sent to the whole world:

“and we have sent you (o muhammad) not but as a mercy for the 'alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists)." (al anbia’:107)

“and we have not sent you (o muhammad) except as a giver of glad tidings and a warner to all mankind, but most of men know not.” (saba’:28)

and as mentioned before, islam is the last and lasting message that organizes all people’s life and offers them all their needs everywhere anytime for their best in this life and the hereafter:

“muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the messenger of allah and the last (end) of the prophets. and allah is ever all-aware of everything.“ ( al ahzab:40)

and the almighty allah said, describing islam as being the message that came to complete all other messages:

“this day, i have perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you, and have chosen for you islam as your religion.“( al ma’idah : 3)

this message is the only complete one and is the last one that will continue on this earth till the end of this life.

“  it is he who has sent his messenger (muhammad ) with guidance and the religion of truth (islam), to make it superior over all religions even though the mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the oneness of allah) hate (it).“  (at tauba:33)

“he it is who has sent his messenger (muhammad ) with guidance and the religion of truth (islam), that he may make it (islam) superior over all religions. and all-sufficient is allah as a witness. “

(al fateh: 28)

“he it is who has sent his messenger (muhammad ) with guidance and the religion of truth (islamic monotheism) to make it victorious over all (other) religions even though the mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers in the oneness of allah and in his messenger muhammad ) hate (it).“ (as saf: 9)

Refuting the Suspicion that Says: The Prophet (PBUH) Bans what Allah has Made Lawful

refuting this suspicion

the insulters of muhammad and islam accuse him of banning things that allah made lawful, quoting a verse from the holy quran:

“o prophet! why do you ban (for yourself) that which allah has made lawful to you, seeking to please your wives? and allah is oft-forgiving, most merciful.” ( at tahrim:1)

this verse and some verses following it, is about an event happened in the prophet’s house:

“and (remember) when the prophet disclosed a matter in confidence to one of his wives (hafsah), so when she told it (to another i.e. 'aishah), and allah made it known to him, he informed part thereof and left a part. then when he told her (hafsah) thereof, she said: "who told you this?" he said: "the all-knower, the all-aware (allah) has told me". (at tahrim:3)

because of this, the prophet swore not to eat in the house of “hafsa” again in order not to make “aisha” feel jealous.

that was what the prophet banned himself from doing, just in order to satisfy his wives.

so accusing the prophet that he bans what allah made lawful, is a completely wrong thing, and the quranic statement isn’t accusing the prophet, but it is a kind of blaming him for not being fair towards himself for the sake of his wives and that is just because of his high manners towards them.

muhammad’s prophecy is beyond all doubts; he never did anything against allah’s teachings:

“nor does he speak of (his own) desire.* it is only an inspiration that is inspired.” (an najm: 3-4)

and allah made this clear in the following verse too:

“and if he (muhammad ) had forged a false saying concerning us (allah),* we surely should have seized him by his right hand (or with power and might),* and then certainly should have cut off his life artery (aorta), *and none of you could withhold us from (punishing) him.”

(al haqqah: 44-47)

as a conclusion we have to say, that the prophet’s promise to his wives is just an oath that needs dissolution and has nothing to do with banning what allah has made lawful:

“allah has already ordained for you (o men), the dissolution of your oaths. and allah is your maula (lord, or master, or protector, etc.) and he is the all-knower, the all-wise.” ( at tahrim:2)

Refuting the Suspicion that Says: The Prophet Glorifies the Black Stone

refuting this suspicion

those people, accusing the prophet that he glorifies the black stone and the ka’ba by walking around it, say that these things are stones that don’t differ from those stones that the polytheists used to worship!!

this opinion is completely wrong. islam is a religion that orders to behave according to high manners and morality and is not against good habits done by other folks before islam or even after.

for example; there was a pact held in the pre-islamic paganism that was called “al fudoul pact”; this pact was held for the sake of supporting the aggrieved, ransoming the kidnapped, helping the indepted and protecting the strangers from the oppressive people of makkah and so on…

prophet muhammad admired this pact and said:” if i were invited to it, i wouldn’t refuse”.

another good habit that is inherited from pre-islamic folks is that inherited from prophet abraham (pbuh) to walk around ka’ba  and also to kiss the black stone.

many hadiths say that this stone is originally from heaven and many studies done later prove this fact.

and the fact that prophet muhammad was kissing the black stone is told us by omar bin al khattab in this right hadith:” omar said when he kissed the black stone :” i swear to allah that i know you’re just a stone that doesn’t benefit or even harm; and i’m kissing you just because i’ve seen the prophet doing it.”

here everybody has to know that the prophet’s kissing the black stone isn’t out of glorifying it, like the polytheists used to do with their stone gods, but it is an order given him by allah. this order and many others, like throwing the devil with stones when performing “ haj” is to show complete obedience to the orders of allah.

there is another thing that we have to mention here; no order given by allah is without a season. an experiment was done and a small part of the black stone was analyzed, this proved that the black stone has special features that aren’t found in any other stone or element on this earth. it has special rays coming out that can affect all people walking around the ka’ba from a very far distance even if they couldn’t reach it and kiss it because of the overcrowded place. and this proves also that this stone is sent by allah from heaven.

Refuting the Suspicion that Says: The Prophet was almost Tempted Away by the Polytheists

refuting this suspicion

those polytheists understood a verse from the quran in a wrong way. now we will introduce this verse and explain :

” verily, they were about to tempt you away from that which we have revealed (the qur'an) unto you (o muhammad ), to fabricate something other than it against us, and then they would certainly have taken you a friend! * and had we not made you stand firm, you would nearly have inclined to them a little.* in that case, we would have made you taste a double portion (of punishment) in this life and a double portion (of punishment) after death. and then you would have found none to help you against us.“ ( al israa’: 73-75)

the reason of this verse was because a legation from “thakeef” ( one of makkah’s tribes) came to the prophet saying:” if you just wait one year till we get what will be given to our “gods” ( stone statues). once we get all the presents we will destroy them and embrace islam.

the prophet almost accepted their offer but allah protected him and made him stand firm.

when the almighty allah says:” you would nearly have inclined to them a little “, that means: you were near to change your mind but allah protected you with sanity and infallibility.  but if you would have accepted their idea, allah wouldn’t forgive you for that.

and all who know the islamic culture, know that “ to incline” ; being near to do the action without doing it, isn’t a sin and doesn’t cause punishment.

this is clear in the prophet’s hadith:” no one is punished for his thoughts unless they turn into actions.”

we conclude that muhammad (pbuh) didn’t commit a mistake because of his infallibility given to him by allah.

Answering the Discredit that Says: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Fought in the Sacred Month

refuting this suspicion

this subject is about the following verse from the holy quran :

“they ask you concerning fighting in the sacred months (i.e. 1st, 7th, 11th and 12th months of the islamic calendar). say, "fighting therein is a great (transgression) but a greater (transgression) with allah is to prevent mankind from following the way of allah, to disbelieve in him, to prevent access to al-masjid-al-haram (at makkah), and to drive out its inhabitants, and al-fitnah (sneaking) is worse than killing. and they will never cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion (islamic monotheism) if they can.” ( al baqara : 217)

all muslims and especially their leader and prophet muhammad( pbuh) are the most knowing that it is firmly forbidden to fight in the sacred months and doing it is a very great sin.

but what shall muslims do if they were attacked by their enemies and were near to be driven out of al-masjid-al-haram (at makkah) although it belongs to them. they of course have to protect themselves and protect al-masjid-al-haram (at makkah).

the quranic law that we can read in the following two verses allows people to protect themselves and their homes and lands from the tyrannical and oppressive forces and to protect the places of worship of all muslims, christians and jewes.

“and if allah did not check one set of people by means of another, the earth would indeed be full of mischief.” ( al baqara:251)

“for had it not been that allah checks one set of people by means of another, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, wherein the name of allah is mentioned much would surely have been pulled down. verily, allah will help those who help his (cause). truly, allah is all-strong, all-mighty.“ (al haj:40)

this is the law that allah orders to apply to prevent those polytheists and all enemies of islam from attacking our lands and holy places.

this means that those who are given strength, wealth and knowledge – according to the quranic law – have to be of good morals and honesty; not to use their strength, wealth and knowledge to destroy and to by tyrannical over the others but to protect noble values to apply justice and spread morality over all societies; and so the whole world will live in freedom and constancy. “those (muslim rulers) who, if we give them power in the land, (they) order for iqamat-as-salat. [i.e. to perform the five compulsory congregational salat (prayers) (the males in mosques)], to pay the zakat and they enjoin al-ma'ruf (i.e. islamic monotheism and all that islam orders one to do), and forbid al-munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism and all that islam has forbidden) [i.e. they make the qur'an as the law of their country in all the spheres of life]. and with allah rests the end of (all) matters (of creatures).” ( al haj:4)

and because that oppressing people and killing them in their lands without any right isn’t of less sanctity than the sacred months, so allah allows those who are oppressed and attacked and killed to fight and protect their lands. this is clear in the verse that we introduced in the beginning of this subject:

“they ask you concerning fighting in the sacred months (i.e. 1st, 7th, 11th and 12th months of the islamic calendar). say, "fighting therein is a great (transgression) but a greater (transgression) with allah is to prevent mankind from following the way of allah, to disbelieve in him, to prevent access to al-masjid-al-haram (at makkah), and to drive out its inhabitants, and al-fitnah (sneaking) is worse than killing. and they will never cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion (islamic monotheism) if they can.” ( al baqara : 217)

Refuting the Suspicion that Says: The Prophet has been Inspired by the Devil

refuting this suspicion

one day, while the prophet was reciting some verses from the quran in front of al ka’ba and when he finished and knelt down, all standing behind him; muslims and polytheists knelt down

the polytheists said as an excuse for their behaviour that muhammad (pbuh) praised their gods ”idols” saying:

“ and those ( gharaneek) white birds ( that was how they used to name their idols) we need their intercession)”!!!

this lie was known as “the story of (al gharaneek ) the white birds”.

the polytheists said that the prophet praised their idols, and so they won’t harm him and all his followers ever again. this lie of course was spread to reach the ears of the muslims who immigrated to abyssinia and caused a lot of them to return back to makkah, but they were tortured much more that before….

imam ibn katheer said that those insulters depended on the following verse in accusing muhammad (pbuh) that he was inspired by the devil to say what he did:

“never did we send a messenger or a prophet before you, but; when he did recite the revelation or narrated or spoke, shaitan (satan) threw (some falsehood) in it. but allah abolishes that which shaitan (satan) throws in. then allah establishes his revelations. and allah is all-knower, all-wise" ( al hajj:52)

but the fact is that the previous verse was sent by allah as a reply for those accusing the prophet of being inspired by the devil, and insisting on the fact that all prophets are infallible..

the correct meaning of the verse is that the devil threw those words of “ al gharaneek” in the hearts of the polytheists and the hypocrites and those weak believers just to distinguish those from the true believers…

“that he (allah) may make what is thrown in by shaitan (satan) a trial for those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy and disbelief) and whose hearts are hardened. and certainly, the zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.) are in an opposition far-off (from the truth against allah's messenger and the believers).” ( al hajj: 53)

“and that those who have been given knowledge may know that it (this qur'an) is the truth from your lord, and that they may believe therein, and their hearts may submit to it with humility. and verily, allah is the guide of those who believe, to the straight path. “ (al hajj: 54)

some scholars said that the polytheists said that they’ve heard the prophet praising their idols just to give excuses for their kneeling down when they heard the quran….

“and if he (muhammad ) had forged a false saying concerning us (allah),* we surely should have seized him by his right hand (or with power and might),* and then certainly should have cut off his life artery (aorta),* and none of you could withhold us from (punishing) him. “

( al haqqah:44-47)

“nor does he speak of (his own) desire.*it is only an inspiration that is inspired  by allah."

 ( an najm : 3-4)

“and when our clear verses are recited unto them, those who hope not for their meeting with us, say: bring us a qur'an other than this, or change it. “say (o muhammad ): "it is not for me to change it on my own accord; i only follow that which is revealed unto me. verily, i fear if i were to disobey my lord, the torment of the great day (i.e. the day of resurrection)." "

( younes: 15)

so the one who accepts the fact that the prophet was inspired by the devil and praised the polytheists’ idols, can not be a true believer because muhammad’s message is to worship the one almighty allah.
