All Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds and peace and blessings be upon the most

honorable of all Prophets and Messengers, Muhammad.

Believing in Allah is the most precious thing a believer owns, if he loses it then it is

a manifest loss. Allah Almighty has said: {And whosoever disbelieves in Faith [i.e.

in the Oneness of Allâh and in all the other Articles of Faith i.e. His (Allâh’s) Angels,

His Holy Books, His Messengers, the Day of Resurrection and Al-Qadar (Divine Pre

ordainments)], then fruitless is his work; and in the Hereafter he will be among the

losers.} [Surat Al-Mâ‘idah: 5].

alakhirati mina alkhasireena

So, the greatest sins ever are the nullifiers of faith, because whosoever commits one

of them, then he is a disbeliever; nothing will avail him, he is eternally dwelling in

Hellfire, we seek refuge in Allah. Allah Almighty has said: }Verily, those who disbe

lieved, and died while they were disbelievers, the (whole) earth full of gold will not

be accepted from anyone of them even if they offered it as a ransom. For them is a

painful torment and they will have no helpers} [Surat Al-‘Imrân: 91].

ahadihim milo alardi thahaban walawi iftada bihi olaika lahum AAathabun aleemun

wama lahum min nasireena

The most prominent of these nullifiers, in short, are:

The first nullifier: denying the Deity of Allah: it is the first of its characteristics. Allah

Almighty has said in a narration about the polytheist disbelievers: {And they say:

«There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys

us except Ad-Dahr (time). And they have no knowledge of it: they only conjecture.}

[Surat Al-Jâthiya: 24]

Transliteration: Waqaloo ma hiya illa hayatuna alddunya namootu wanahya wama

yuhlikuna illa alddahru wama lahum bithalika min AAilmin in hum illa yathunnoona

Everyone who sets a partner to Allah is a polytheist just like Fir‘aun (Pharaoh) when

he said: «I am your lord, most high.», and when the Nimrod Ben-Canaan said: «I

give life and cause death.»

This view includes: those who believe in the unity of existence, they are those who

claim that Allah is the essence of this creation - Glorified and High be He! High

above (the great falsehood) that they say! Included is also the Magi belief that the

origin of the incidents of Good are grounded on the light and that the incidents of

Evil are grounded on the darkness. And enters into this the denial of the deity of

Allah, as has been established by a handful of atheists, past and present. They deny

the existence of the Creator, and they attribute deeds in this existence to nature;

Glorified and High be Allah above (the great falsehood) that they say.

 To answer them in short:

 1. It goes without saying that any creation must have a creator; it is a self-evident

truth even to kids. If a boy is hit by someone, even if not seen by him, he would

ask: who has hit me? And if he is told that no one has hit him, his mind will not

accept such a thing. This magnificent creation is in itself an evidence of the exis

tence of a great Creator. Allah Almighty has said: {This is the creation of Allâh. So

show Me that which those (whom you worship) besides Him have created.} [Surat

Luqmân: 11]

Transliteration: Hatha khalqu Allahi faaroonee matha khalaqa allatheena min doonihi

Allah Almighty has said: {Or do they assign to Allâh partners who created the like of

His creation, so that the creation (which they made and His creation) seemed alike

to them?» Say: «Allâh is the Creator of all things; and He is the One, the Irresist

ible.»} [Surat Ar-Ra‘d: 16].

Transliteration: am jaAAaloo lillahi shurakaa khalaqoo kakhalqihi fatashabaha

alkhalqu AAalayhim quli Allahu khaliqu kulli shayin wahuwa alwahidu alqahharu

Allah Almighty has also said: }Verily those on whom you call besides Allâh, cannot

create (even) a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose.{ [Surat Al

Hajj: 73],

Transliteration: lan yakhluqoo thubaban walawi ijtamaAAoo lahu

And He has said: {Were they created by nothing? Or were they themselves the

creators? (35) Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Nay, but they have no

f

 irm Belief.{ [Surat At-Tûr: 35-36]

Transliteration: Am khuliqoo min ghayri shayin am humu alkhaliqoona (35) Am

khalaqoo alssamawati waalarda bal la yooqinoona

 2. The uniformity of the whole world and its perfection is evidence that its director

is one God and one Lord, He has neither partners nor rivals; the Almighty has said:

{No son (or offspring) did Allâh beget, nor is there any ilâh (god) along with Him.

(If there had been many gods), then each god would have taken away what he had

created, and some would have tried to overcome others!{ [Surat Al-Mu‘minûn: 91]

Transliteration: Ma ittakhatha Allahu min waladin wama kana maAAahu min ilahin

ithan lathahaba kullu ilahin bima khalaqa walaAAala baAAduhum AAala baAAdin

 3. Subjecting the creatures to perform their functions and missions, there is no crea

ture that would decline or refrain from performing its task in this universe; and this

is what was concluded by Moses when the Pharaoh asked him: {Fir‘aun (Pharaoh)

said: «Who then, O Mûsâ (Moses), is the Lord of you two?» (49) [Mûsâ (Moses)]

said: «Our Lord is He Who gave to each thing its form and nature, then guided it

aright.»} [Surat Tâha: 49-50].

 4

Transliteration: Qala faman rabbukuma ya moosa (49) Qala rabbuna allathee aAAta

kulla shayin khalqahu thumma hada

This means: it is our Lord who has created all creatures, and has given every crea

ture its appropriate constitution and all its attributes (and after that, He has guided)

every living creature to what purpose it was created for. This guidance is the whole

complete guidance fully manifested in all creatures; each creature you find is per

forming what it was created for: to bring about benefits and shove off harms. Even

animals: Allah has given them a mind that permits them to do what will benefit

them and push away what would harm them and manage what is needed for their

life. This is shown in the words of Allah: {Who made everything He has created

good} [Surat As-Sajdah: 7]

Transliteration: Allathee ahsana kulla shayin khalaqahu

Truthful was the poet when he said:

In everything there is a sign *** that tells He is One

The second nullifier: Polytheism in worshipping Allah by performing some rituals of

worship to other than Him: invoking other than Allah, offering sacrifices and vows to

other than Allah from the dead people in their graves to the jinn and devils; to fear

the dead or jinn or demons that they could harm or hurt them; and to ask and hope

from other than Allah to fulfill needs and relieve distress, which is now being prac

ticed around the shrines built on the graves of the Auliyâ‘ and the righteous in some

Islamic countries. Allah Almighty has said: {And they worship besides Allâh things

that harm them not, nor profit them, and they say: «These are our intercessors with

Allâh.» Say: «Do you inform Allâh of that which He knows not in the heavens and

on the earth?» Glorified and Exalted is He above all that which they associate as

partners (with Him)!{ [Surat Yûnus: 18].

Transliteration: WayaAAbudoona min dooni Allahi ma la yadurruhum wala yan

faAAuhum wayaqooloona haolai shufaAAaona AAinda Allahi qul atunabbioona Allaha

bima la yaAAlamu fee alssamawati wala fee alardi subhanahu wataAAala AAamma

yushrikoona

Included in this verse: those who take the dead in the graves from the righteous as

intercessors and mediators between them and Allah; they invoke and ask them for

help; they circumambulate around their shrines and offer sacrifices, and this is the

polytheism of the infidels. Allah almighty has said about these polytheists: }We wor

ship them only that they may bring us near to Allâh} [Surat Az-Zumar: 3].

Transliteration: ma naAAbuduhum illa liyuqarriboona ila Allahi zulfa

The third nullifier: Denying anything that Allah has established for Himself or that

His Messenger, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, has proven for Him, as

well as assigning an attribute of Allah to one of His slaves such as His knowledge;

also trying to prove something denied by Allah Himself or denied by His Messenger,

peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Almighty has said: {Say (O Muham

mad): «He is Allâh, (the) One. (1) «Allâh-us-Samad [Allâh the Self-Sufficient Master,

Whom all creatures need, (He neither eats nor drinks)]. (2) «He begets not, nor was

He begotten. (3) «And there is none co-equal or comparable unto Him.»} [Surat Al

Ikhlâs]

Transliteration: Qul huwa Allahu ahadun (1) Allahu alssamadu (2) Lam yalid walam

yooladu (3) Walam yakun lahu kufuwan ahadun

The Almighty has said: {And (all) the Most Beautiful Names belong to Allâh, so call

on Him by them, and leave the company of those who belie or deny (or utter impi

ous speech against) His Names. They will be requited for what they used to do.}

[Surat Al-A’râf: 180]

The Almighty has said: {There is nothing like Him; and He is the All-Hearer, the All

Seer.{ [Surat Ash-Shûrâ: 11].

Transliteration: laysa kamithlihi shayon wahuwa alssameeAAu albaseeru

The Almighty has said: {Lord of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between

them, so worship Him (Alone) and be constant and patient in His worship. Do you

know of any who is similar to Him? (of course none is similar or co-equal or compa

rable to Him, and He has none as partner with Him). [There is nothing like Him and

He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer]} [Surat Maryam: 65].

Transliteration: Rabbu alssamawati waalardi wama baynahuma faoAAbudhu waista

bir liAAibadatihi hal taAAlamu lahu samiyyan

The interrogation here is to deny the fact asked for which means that He has no

peer to partner Him in worship.

The fourth nullifier: accusing the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah

be upon him, of lying about anything that was revealed to him. Allah Almighty has

said: {And if they belie you, those before them also belied. Their Messengers came

to them with clear signs, and with the Scriptures, and the book giving light. (25)

Then I took hold of those who disbelieved: and how terrible was My denial (punish

ment)!{ [Surat Fâtir: 25-26]

jaathum rusuluhum bialbayyinati wabialzzuburi wabialkitabi almuneeri (25) Thumma

akhathtu allatheena kafaroo fakayfa kana nakeeri

The fifth nullifier: believing that the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings of

Allah be upon him, is not perfect or complete. Allah Almighty has said: {This day, I

have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have cho

sen for you Islâm as your religion} [Surat Al-Mâ‘idah: 3]

Transliteration: alyawma akmaltu lakum deenakum waatmamtu AAalaykum niAAma

tee waradeetu lakumu alislama deenan

The fifth nullifier: Denying what Allah has revealed of the Islamic rulings; or believ

ing that the rulings of other than Him is better or more comprehensive to human

needs; or believing that the rulings of Allah and His Messenger, peace and blessings

of Allah be upon him, are equal to other rulings; or believing that it is permissible to

rule with other than that Allah Almighty has revealed – even if he thought that the

ruling of Allah is better.

In the same line is ruling by the man-made laws which contradict the provisions of

Allah Glorified and Exalted.

Allah almighty has said: {Have you seen those (hyprocrites) who claim that they

believe in that which has been sent down to you, and that which was sent down

before you, and they wish to go for judgement (in their disputes) to the Taghut

(false judges, etc.) while they have been ordered to reject them. But Shaitan (Sa

tan) wishes to lead them far astray. (60) And when it is said to them: «Come to

what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger (Muhammad SAW),» you (Muham

mad SAW) see the hypocrites turn away from you (Muhammad SAW) with aversion.

(61) How then, when a catastrophe befalls them because of what their hands have

sent forth, they come to you swearing by Allah, «We meant no more than goodwill

and conciliation!» (62) They (hypocrites) are those of whom Allah knows what is

in their hearts; so turn aside from them (do not punish them) but admonish them,

and speak to them an effective word (i.e. to believe in Allah, worship Him, obey

Him, and be afraid of Him) to reach their innerselves. (63) We sent no Messenger,

but to be obeyed by Allah‘s Leave. If they (hypocrites), when they had been unjust

to themselves, had come to you (Muhammad SAW) and begged Allah‘s Forgive

ness, and the Messenger had begged forgiveness for them: indeed, they would have

found Allah All-Forgiving (One Who accepts repentance), Most Merciful. (64) But

no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad SAW)

judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against

your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.} [Surat An-Nisâ‘: 60-65]

Obeying scholars and the slaves of Allah in making lawful things as unlawful and un

lawful things as lawful certainly nullifies faith. Allah Almighty has said: }They (Jews

and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allâh (by

obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own

desires without being ordered by Allâh), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah,

son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the

Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] to worship none but One Ilâh (God - Allâh)

Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be

to Him (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him).”} [Su

rat At-Taubah: 31]

Transliteration: Ittakhathoo ahbarahum waruhbanahum arbaban min dooni Allahi

waalmaseeha ibna maryama wama omiroo illa liyaAAbudoo ilahan wahidan la ilaha

illa huwa subhanahu AAamma yushrikoona

The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, recitd this verse to ‘Adi bin

Hâtim At-Tâ‘I, may Allah be pleased with him, so he said: «O Messenger of Allah!

We do not worship them.» He answered: They certainly do. [They (i.e. the rabbis

and monks) made lawful things as unlawful and unlawful things as lawful, and they

(i.e. Jews and Christians) followed them; and by doing so, they really worshipped

them]. If this is the case with scholars and men of religion, then what about those

who follow the laws which were made by atheists and infidels!

The seventh nullifier: Not to consider the polytheists as infidels or to have doubts

about their disbelief, because this doubts what the Messenger of Allah, peace and

blessings of Allah be upon him, has brought about, Allah All mighty said: {and said:

«Verily, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and we are really in

grave doubt as to that to which you invite us (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism).»} [Surat

Ibrâhîm: 9].

Transliteration: waqaloo inna kafarna bima orsiltum bihi wainna lafee shakkin mim

ma tadAAoonana ilayhi mureebun

The eighth nullifier: Mocking or joking about Allah or the Quran or the religion or

the reward and punishment; and making fun of the Messenger of Allah, peace and

blessings of Allah be upon him, or of one of the prophets, whether joking or serious.

Allah Almighty ha said: {If you ask them (about this), they declare: “We were only

talking idly and joking.” Say: “Was it at Allâh, and His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses,

lessons, signs, revelations…) and His Messenger that you were mocking?” (65) Make

no excuse; you disbelieved after you had believed.} [Surat At-Taubah: 65-66]

The ninth nullifier: backing up and helping the disbelievers against the Muslims. Al

lah Almighty has said: }O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as

Auliyâ’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Auliyâ’ of each other. And if any

amongst you takes them (as Auliyâ’), then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allâh

guides not those people who are the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers and un

just).} [Surat Al-Mâ‘idah: 51]

awliyaa baAAduhum awliyao baAAdin waman yatawallahum minkum fainnahu min

The tenth nullifier: Whoever thinks that anyone can afford to depart from the guid

ance of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, or that he should

not follow this religion: Islam. Allah Almighty has said: {And whoever seeks a reli

gion other than Islâm, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will

be one of the losers} [Surat Al-‘Imrân: 85]

Transliteration: Waman yabtaghi ghayra alislami deenan falan yuqbala minhu wa

huwa fee alakhirati mina alkhasireena

The eleventh nullifier: the total renunciation of the religion of Allah Almighty; or its

basics; not learning it or trying to learn it neither working according to it. Allah Al

mighty has said: {And who does more wrong than he who is reminded of the Ayât

(proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of his Lord, then turns

aside therefrom? Verily, We shall exact retribution from the Mujrimûn (criminals,

disbelievers, polytheists, sinners).} [Surat As-Sajda: 22].

 11

Transliteration: Waman athlamu mimman thukkira biayati rabbihi thumma aAArada

The twelfth nullifier: whoever hates anything which was brought about by the Mes

senger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; even if he works accord

ing to it. Allah Almighty has said: {That is because they hate that which Allâh has

sent down (this Qur’ân and Islâmic laws, etc.); so He has made their deeds fruit

less.} [Surat Muhammad: 9]

Transliteration: Thalika biannahum karihoo ma anzala Allahu faahbata aAAmalahum

The thirteenth nullifier: performing acts of magic or approving doing them; like the

spells and enchantments made to make a man turn away from his wife and vice

versa; or that to make a man get closer to his wife and vice versa. Allah almighty

has said: {Sulaimân did not disbelieve, but the Shayâtîn (devils) disbelieved, teach

ing men magic and such things that came down at Babylon to the two angels,

Hârût and Mârût, but neither of these two (angels) taught anyone (such things) till

they had said, «We are only for trial, so disbelieve not (by learning this magic from

us).»} [Surat Al-Baqarah: 102]

The fourteenth nullifier: Allah Almighty has said: }But if they repent, perform As

Salât, (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and give Zakât, then they are your brethren in religion.}

[Surat At-Taubah: 11]

And He has said: {Then, there has succeeded them a posterity who have given up

As-Salât (the prayers) [i.e. made their Salât (prayers) to be lost, either by not offer

ing them or by not offering them perfectly or by not offering them in their proper

f

His words {and believe} indicate that giving up prayers is disbelieving. It is in the

Hadith: «the pledge between us and them is prayer; whosoever gives it up has re

jected faith». [Authenticated by Al-Albani]

There are many nullifiers of faith that generally concur to what has been previously

mentioned; such as denial of the Quran (the words of) or any part of it, or doubt

ing its inimitability; abusing the Quran (the book itself) or any part of it, making

unlawful things as lawful such as adultery, drinking alcohol; or insulting and slander

ing religion; or not believing in heaven and hell or the torment of the grave and its

blessing and the like.

Question: if the slave of Allah commits a nullifier of faith: does he necessarily know

that his deeds have been wasted? Or are his deeds wasted without him knowing

about it?

The answer: there is no doubt that the slave of Allah may have his deeds wasted

while he thinks that he is being righteous and acquiring good by his deeds. Allah

Almighty has said: {Say (O Muhammad): «Shall We tell you the greatest losers in

respect of (their) deeds? (103) «Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life

while they thought that they were acquiring good by their deeds. (104) «They are

those who deny the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)

of their Lord and the Meeting with Him (in the Hereafter). So their works are in vain,

and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall assign no weight for them.} [Surat Al

Kahf: 103-105]
