GAMBLE; THE WAY TO LOSE

EPISODE 2️⃣: Setting Free From This Sin

➖➖➖

Allāh (ﷻ) says,

They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allāh makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.

(Al-Baqarah 2:219)

The one who has sincerely repented from gambling is required to give out charity from his property.

As the Prophet (ﷺ) said;

“Whoever swears and says in his oath ‘By al-Laat and al-‘Uzza,’ let him say ‘Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah (there is no god but Allaah).’ And whoever says to his companion, ‘Come on, let’s gamble,’ let him give in charity.”

(Sahih Al- Bukhari 6650)

In an attempt to explain the Hadith above, Al-Nawawi said:

_the scholars said, he enjoined charity as an expiation for the sin of speaking these words.

Al-Khattaabi said, What it means is that he should give in charity the amount that he wanted to gamble.

Al-Nawawi said, the correct view is that which was stated by the scholars, and which is the apparent meaning of the hadeeth, that it does not have to be this specific amount, but that he should give in charity whatever he can, of things that are counted as charity. This is supported by the report which says, “Let him give something in charity.”

(Al-Mawsoo’ah al-Fiqhiyyah , vol. 39, p. 407)

The individual should avoid any person and destroy any object that reminds him of gamble, he should surround himself with people who will remind him of Allāh and who will help him learn more about the Deen, he should read much of the Qur'an, perform the obligatory prayers at their appointed time, and also the voluntary prayers as much as he can, engage in lots of zikr and istighfar.

As Allāh says;

Recite, [O Muhammad], what has been revealed to you of the Book and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allāh is greater. And Allāh knows that which you do.

(Al-'Ankabut 29:45)

Ibn Kathir said;

Prayer includes two things:the first of which is giving up immoral behaviour and evil deeds, i.e., praying regularly enables a person to give up these things.

Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) said:

"A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, `So-and-so prays at night, but when morning comes, he steals.'

The Prophet said:

What you are saying (i.e., the Salah) will stop him from doing that."

(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 9778)

Prayer also includes the remembrance of Allāh, which is the higher objective, as Allāh says in the above ayah:

and the remembrance of Allāh is greater indeed, meaning it is more important than the former.

May Allāh accept our repentance and give us the ability to work hard to earn halal income.
