Ashura between Sunnah and heresy

By Sheikh Abdullah bin Abdo Numan Al-Awadi

 The first sermon.

Praise be to God, we praise Him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in God from the evils of ourselves, and from the evils of our deeds. He whom God guides, there is no misleading him, and he who misleads, there is no guide for him, and I bear witness that there is no god but God alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

“O you who have believed, fear God as you should be revered, and do not die unless you are Muslims” [Al Imran 102].  ) O people, fear your Lord who created you from creating one of them her husband and transmit them many men and women, and fear God, who asks by God and the womb you were an observer ([women 1].  ) O ye who believe, fear Allah and say sound * fit your deeds and forgive you your sins and obey Allah and His Messenger, a great victory (won [parties: 70.71].

 Then:

O Muslims, we are in the month of Muharram, a great month of the greatness of God Almighty, Fjolh of the four sacred months, he says:) The number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah on the creation of the heavens and the earth, of which four are sacred is religion, so wrong not yourselves therein and fight  The polytheists as a whole are as they fight you as a whole, and know that God is with the righteous” (At-Tawbah: 36).

And from glorifying God is that we glorify what God Almighty has glorified, the Almighty said: “That and whoever honors the symbols of God, it is from the piety of hearts” [Al-Hajj: 32].

It is the glorification of God Almighty: veneration of the sacred months, including the month of God Muharram.

And God Almighty has mentioned the veneration of these sacred months in the Almighty’s verse: “Do not wrong yourselves during these months” [At-Tawbah 36].

It is a sentence that pervades all kinds of injustice: man’s injustice to his Lord, man’s injustice to himself, and his injustice to others from God Almighty’s creation.

Servants of God, the servant is required to abandon all sins at all times and months, but these four months have an advantage and speciality over others.  Let the Muslim fear his Lord in it, and let him know its greatness and its worth.

O Muslims, the month of Allah, Muharram, is a virtuous month, and among its virtues is that it is a virtuous time for the worship of fasting.  The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: The best fasting after Ramadan is the month of God Muharram, and the best prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer [2].

So happy for those who preceded this month to this great worship whose reward is doubled in this holy month.

Do not know - O servants of God - that the greatest day of this month for which it is desirable to fast is the day of Ashura.  It is the tenth day of this month.

This great day is a blessed day, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, urged him to fast, and he explained the reward for that.

This is a great spoil to expiate the sins of a year by fasting for a day, so how many sins do we commit throughout the year, and we do not have a large share of good deeds that we rely on to expiate our sins.  This is good flowing, which God has given to His servants, so where are its people and their demand for it? Do you not want God to forgive you, and God is Forgiving, Most Merciful?

However, this expiation for the sins of the Sunnah is only for minor sins, and major sins require sincere repentance, as mentioned by many scholars.

So do not miss - O Muslim - the fast of this day;  It is a cold booty, and God Almighty grants those who fasted it.

O Muslims, the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was keen to fast this day, and he sought it more than others;  For the greater good, and more grace.

On the authority of Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with him, he said: I did not see the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, so keen to fast on a day that he preferred it over other than this day, the day of Ashura, and this month means: the month of Ramadan [4].

And this investigation and care became the habit of the companions of the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, and may God be pleased with them, including: Omar, Ali, Abu Musa, Abdul Rahman bin Auf, Ibn Abbas, Abdullah bin Salam, Ibn Masoud, Jaber bin Samra, and Qais bin Saad.  And others, may God be pleased with them all, for Omar sent to Al-Harith bin Hisham: “Tomorrow is the day of Ashura, so fast, and order your family to fast” [5].

And on the authority of Al-Aswad bin Yazid, he said: I have not seen any of the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, who was in Kufa commanding the fast of Ashura from Ali and Abu Musa [6].

Ibn Abd al-Barr said in al-Tamheed: “And we narrated on the authority of Ibn Masoud, Jaber bin Samra and Qais bin Saad, they said: We were commanded to fast Ashura, and when Ramadan came, we were not commanded and did not forbid it, and we do it.”

It is better - Muslims - that this day be accompanied by fasting on the day before it.

or a day thereafter;  Because this is a violation of the Jews;  Because they fasted him alone, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, liked to oppose them.

That is why he - peace be upon him - said: If I stay to meet, I will fast on the ninth [7].  But his death was urgent, and he died before reaching Muharram, may God bless him and grant him peace.

The best thing about fasting is what Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, mentioned when he said: There are three stages of fasting, the most complete of which is: to fast a day before it and a day after it, followed by that: to fast the ninth and tenth, and he has most of the hadiths, followed by singling out the tenth one by fasting.

O Muslims, fasting on the day of Ashura has passed through stages.

As for the first stages, the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, used to fast it with the Quraysh while he was in Mecca, then he fasted it with the Muslims in Medina, and this was desirable, then he ordered to fast it, and it was obligatory.  When Ramadan became obligatory, fasting became desirable.

In the two Sahihs on the authority of Aisha, may God be pleased with her, she said: It was the day of Ashura that the Quraish fasted during the pre-Islamic era, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to fast.

Servants of God, the day of Ashura is a historical day, rooted in the depths of time, and it has become a sacred day for some nations.

For the Jews, it is the day when God Almighty saved Moses, peace be upon him, and those with him from the realization of Pharaoh and his army.

It came in the two Sahihs on the authority of Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them, who said: The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, came to Medina and saw the Jews fasting on the day of Ashura, so he said: What is this?  They said: This is a righteous day, this is the day God saved the Children of Israel from their enemy, so Moses fasted on it, thank you. He said: I have more right to Moses than you.

And in the hadith of Abu Musa, may God be pleased with him - with Muslim - he said: The day of Ashura was a day that the Jews venerated and took as a holiday. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Fast it you.

As for the Christians, their fast was according to the Jews.

As for the Quraysh in the pre-Islamic era, their fasting for him may have been received from those before them.  That is why they were venerating him by fasting and covering the Kaaba.

And it was said: The Quraish committed a sin during the pre-Islamic era, and it became grave in their hearts, so it was said to them: Fasting Ashura expiates that. This was mentioned by Ikrimah, a student of Ibn Abbas.  And it was said: The Quraysh were affected by a drought, then it was lifted from them, so they fasted as a thank you.

I said what you heard, and I ask God’s forgiveness for me and you, so ask His forgiveness;  He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

 The second sermon.

Praise be to God who guided us to Islam, and we would not have been guided had it not been for God guided us, and prayers and peace be upon the bestowed mercy and the grace granted, Muhammad bin Abdullah, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family and companions, and whoever is guided by his guidance to the Day of Judgment.

 But after:

O Muslims, on the day of Ashura in the sixty-first year of the Hijrah, a painful historical event occurred for every sincere Muslim, which resulted in ideas and methods of behavior that followed it through time.

This event is the killing of Hussein bin Ali, the grandson of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, may God be pleased with him and his father, in the land of Karbala in the country of Iraq.

The story is long and weeping, but its summary is: Al-Hussein, may God be pleased with him, remained in the Prophet’s city after the death of his brother, al-Hasan, may God be pleased with him, there for a period of time.  Then letters and letters came to him from the people of Iraq asking him to come to them to lead them in the fight against the Umayyad ruler there.

So this invitation was accepted by Al-Hussein, may God be pleased with him, so he wanted to go to Iraq, so Abdullah bin Omar, may God be pleased with them both, came to him, when he learned about these messages.  Before you.” Al-Hussain refused, so Ibn Omar wept, kissed what was between his eyes, and said: “May God entrust you from the dead.”  Ibn Abbas and Ibn al-Zubayr, may God be pleased with them, also forbade him, and al-Husayn, may God be pleased with him, did not respond to that, and he went to Kufa until he reached Karbala, where he was unjustly killed, may God be pleased with him.

Those murderers committed a great sin with this heinous act on the son of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace.

O Muslims, Al-Hussein bin Ali, may God be pleased with him, went to his Lord unjustly as his father Ali, may God be pleased with him, when he was unjustly killed, and died just as the Messenger of God and the four Caliphs after him, and other heads of Muslims, the family of the House and the honorable Companions, whose death was a tragedy for the people of Islam.

But what is unfortunate is that the Rafidah in the world prepare for this day on the day of Ashura every year, and not on other days, by wailing, beating the chest, scratching the faces and smashing the heads, until the children were not spared from that, all of this is a grief for Al-Hussain, may God be pleased with him.

And these actions - esteemed wise ones - that they do on this day contradict Islam, good morals, sound minds, and sound civilized behavior.

So why all this wailing and torture for the soul and the souls of the people over the death of Al-Hussein, may God be pleased with him, and not in the death of the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, whose death was the greatest calamity of death in the nation?!  and why not

Was this not the case with the death of Hamzah, whom the polytheists did not content themselves with killing until they retaliated against him?!  And why was he not in the death of his father Ali, may God be pleased with him, and in his brother al-Hassan, may God be pleased with him, who is the older brother?!

Why all this remembrance of Al-Hussain and they only mention Al-Hassan a little, and why the Imamate is among the children of Al-Hussain, and it was not among the children of Al-Hassan at all?  Why are their conversations more praising Hussein than Hassan?  All this is because Hussain’s wife is Shahrbanu bint Yazdegerd, and it is said that her name is Sulafa, and her son is Ali ibn al-Husayn - Zain al-Abidin. The Shiites say: The Hashemite tree met with the Persian Sassanid tree, so they love Hussein and the sons of Hussein;  Because the sons of al-Husayn are Persian uncles, because of Shahrbanu, the daughter of Yazdgerd!!

Muslims, the heinous deeds that some Shiites do on the day of Ashura are deeds that the people of the three favorite centuries, including the honorable Ahl al-Bayt, did not do, and they are more loving and more sincere in veneration of the family of those who came after them?!  Those actions that occur from them on the day of Ashura to this day are acts of ignorance that Islam has forbidden, the religion of reason and straight behavior.

God Almighty says: “And do not kill yourselves, for God has been merciful to you” (An-Nisa 29).

And the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: There are four aspects of the pre-Islamic era in my nation that they will not leave behind: pride in calculus, stigmatization of lineages, raindrops on the stars, and wailing.  .

And he, peace and blessings be upon him, said: He is not one of us who hits the cheeks and slits the pockets and calls on the pretext of ignorance [9].

Abu Musa, may God be pleased with him, fainted, with his head in the lap of a woman from his family. A woman cried, and he could not reply to her. When he woke up, he said: I am innocent of whom the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was innocent of.  The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, was free from shaving, slithering, and hardship[10].

The hairdresser is the one who shaves her hair during calamity, the hairdresser is the one who raises her voice in it, and the hard woman is the one who rips her clothes during calamity as well.

Wailing, beating the body, raising voices, tearing clothes, and wearing black are all actions that occur on the day of Ashura, according to some Shiites.

Among the transgressions that occur on this day as well: insulting the Companions, may God be pleased with them, and slandering them, and the Messenger of God - may God’s prayers and peace be upon him - says: Do not insult my companions, do not abuse my companions, for by the One in Whose hand is my soul, if one of you spent the like of Uhud in gold, he would not have reached the hand of one of them  Nor is it fair [11].

In addition to these reprehensible actions, both legally and rationally;  At the grave of Al-Hussain, may God be pleased with him, images of polytheism with God Almighty occur, such as: The supplication of al-Husayn, may God be pleased with him, and seeking His help, seeking benefit from him and repelling harm, and God Almighty says:  * if God touches affliction, none can remove it but is not fine but restore you to rad the bounty affects him whom he will of his slaves and is the Forgiving, Most Merciful ([Yunus 160-107].

Among the violations: pilgrimage to visit the sights and graves, including the tomb of Al-Hussein, may God be pleased with him.

And they say: Visiting the tomb of Al-Hussain is equivalent to twenty Hajj!!.

And they say: Whoever visits the grave of Hussain on the day of Ashura is like one who visits God on His throne!!!

And the Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, says: Do not travel except to three mosques: Al-Masjid Al-Haram, the Mosque of the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, and Al-Aqsa Mosque [12].

Among the violations: the mixing of women with men and encouragement of immorality called mut’ah.

Among the violations: that these actions they are doing are barbaric and not civilized, but rather distort the image of Islam and Muslims for those who do not know Islam;  That is why Britain - which wanted to distort Islam - financed the Husayni processions and exploited them to the best of their ability.

It has been said that the Iraqi Prime Minister during the British occupation of Iraq when he visited London to negotiate, the British told him: We are in Iraq to help the Iraqi people;  In order to get out of barbarism, this angered the Prime Minister, so they tactfully apologized to him and showed him a film about what is happening in Karbala!

O Muslims, if these innovated actions were true, if their owners were to follow the Ahl al-Bayt, they would not have done them.  following the Ahl al-Bayt;  The sons and grandsons of Hussein did not do it.

Moreover, there are verbal texts from the imams of the Ahl al-Bayt forbidding these actions mentioned in the books of the Shiites themselves.

Ali, may God be pleased with him, said: “Three deeds are from the pre-Islamic era, and he counted among them: mourning for the dead.”  He also said: "Do not wear black, for it is the clothing of Pharaoh."

Jafar al-Sadiq, may God have mercy on him, said on the authority of his forefathers: “The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, forbade wailing and listening to it.”  And the Shiites mention that Al-Hussein, may God be pleased with him, forbade his sister from mourning, so why would they mourn if they loved Hussein?!

If your love was true, I would obey him

A lover is obedient to him who loves

We ask God to give us insight into our religion, and to turn those who deviate from it to Him.

And to guide the Muslims to the right path.
